Fall activities and sports shape the atmosphere needed for a healthy foundation for the school year. There is nothing more exciting than knowing your favorite sport is just around the corner. Whether you play a sport or not, the anticipation that comes with winning something as a community speaks for itself. RMHS thrives in almost every sport offered: football, volleyball, hockey- the list is endless. This year we celebrate all the teams who played within their regular season, and the teams who were able to advance into championships.
Over the past few years, the girls’ swim team has been growing with all-star swimmers who have been developing strong leadership skills. The complete devastation of losing, even if it's just one game, is hard to accept. The girls came so close to the title last year, but unfortunately did not place first, although they still managed to place third. However, this memory was replaced with new emotions of joy, as the team landed back on top at the state championship this past fall.
Before the state championship, excitement was at its peak when the girls were announced as the Middlesex League Champions. It was no surprise that they would go on to receive the highest ranking Massachusetts offers, the State Championship afterwards. States were held at the Blodgett Pool at Harvard University; swimming at a college that could very well be the dream college of some girls had to have been thrilling. The team not only made it until the very end, but came home with State Champions sweatshirts on their backs.
Most of the girls have been swimming since they could walk, some before that. So it is not shocking to hear how far they have come. Playing a sport with so much passion has more than paid off for all the girls undoubtedly. Furthermore, winning the championship empowered our RMHS community as a whole. Sophomore swimmer Ellie Murray described the feeling as “something magical”. Murray will forever remember the moment that they announced the title, as it was something she has always dreamed about.
It is hard to imagine what the freshmen on the team may be feeling- the first high school sport they will ever play won the state championship. The anticipation for the upcoming years not only exists in the hearts of these young swimmers, but in the fans who have supported them from the beginning.
The RMHS community will be rooting the girls’ swim team on for years to come! We are proud of the journey they have been through together, and are looking forward to the years to come! We are pleased to watch these girls grow up into the champions they are, and good luck for the next season. Congratulations to the RMHS girls’ swim team; you deserve it.
