Midterm Tips and Tricks

Olivia D'Amico

  1. Get plenty of sleep- Try to sleep at least 8 hours or more every night a week or two before midterms begin. Research has found that sleeping before an exam is better than staying awake and looking over notes for 4 or 5 hours that you are not going to remember. When you sleep, your brain is going over everything you learned and studied that day. More sleep equals better grades.

  2. Studying- Try to make your own study guide. When you make your own study guide, you are more likely to understand the subject because you’ve written about it. If you got a study guide from a friend or a classmate, you may not understand it 100%. From personal experience, the times when I created my own study guide I scored better on my tests than when I got a study guide from a friend. Also, start studying for your exam a week or two in advance, especially during midterms when you have a lot of material to go over. You don’t want to cram it all in on one day.

  3. Memorization- When you’re trying to memorize vocabulary, use flashcards instead of using Quizlet. Writing something down with a pen or pencil helps the brain memorize faster than typing it on a phone or laptop. If you are a kinesthetic learner, try writing the word down multiple times. If you are an auditory learner, try saying the word out loud.

  4. Don’t stress- Preparing for multiple exams can get very stressful. Remember to take breaks while you're studying. Go out with some friends for lunch or to the mall. Exercising can also help with stress, so go to the gym or go on a run. And most importantly, don’t forget to breathe. Taking long deep breaths can relieve stress.

  5. Eat well. Eating nutritious foods helps fuel your brain and the better the fuel your brain gets, the better you study. Try to drink a lot of water... staying hydrated is key. Most importantly, don’t skip breakfast; breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast can help improve concentration and performance on your exam
