Important Tips for the Holidays

Brenna Sullivan

How to avoid political fights at family parties:

Most family holiday parties are great, but there’s always that one cousin or aunt that has an opinion on everything and needs to share it with everyone in the room. Whether it’s on the current president, local town laws, or even having to do with the school system, it’s never fun to get into it with a relative around the holidays. In case politics do come up, one foolproof way to avoid talking about it is to change the subject. Compliment the food or your uncle’s sweater, ask about your cousin’s club or team, announce that dishes must be done and people are needed in the kitchen. Finding a different topic will take everyone’s mind off the subject at hand, if only for a little while.

If for some reason the conversation cannot be avoided, or the person refuses to stop talking about it, joining in is actually a better option than leaving the room or not saying anything at all. With you in the conversation, you’ll be able to do your best to keep it lighthearted and make sure nothing gets too heated. You could even have a patient aunt join in too, to help you keep the peace. It would be in everyone’s best interest that you lead the conversation, rather than your old, stubborn great uncle.

How to avoid stressing about gifts:

These days, most people tend to do a Secret Santa with their friends. This can be great if you know exactly what to get the person, and horrible if you have no idea. One way to avoid stress whether you know what you’re getting or not, is to wrap your gifts as soon as you get them. Wrapping your gift earlier more efficient. It eliminates another thing on your to-do list and you won’t forget about it until five minutes before exchanging.

If you’re at a loss for what to get, think of the person’s favorite sports team, show, band, or book, and get them something that has to do with that. Big patriots fan? Get them a sweatshirt or hat; something that everyone needs in the winter. Do they love to watch The Office? A “World’s Best Boss” mug would definitely do the trick. Listen to music all the time? Get them an iTunes gift card or a t-shirt with their favorite band. And if all else fails, everyone loves fuzzy socks.
